WESTWARD BOUND
My father decided one summer he would take the family out west. The only thing I remember about TEXAS was it’s size. I can remember taking a nap and waking up we were still in TEXAS. It was hot. We made it to CALIFORNIA which was the highlight of the whole trio. We wemt to the WALT DISNEY studio. What a peaceful place! They were in the process of filming a segment for the MICKEY MOUSE CLUB. Ben and I got to meet all the mouseketeers. One of the ladys told my my mother they would like to come down to NEW ORLEANS during MARDI GRAS and film a segment here. That sounded exciting but the fun was just about to begin!

THE ROSE GROWS
I don’t think my mother(THE ROSE) ever was able to sweep the stage floor dust from her feet. She became active in the LITTLE THEATRE. She starred in many plays. Amomg them were THE GLASS MANAGERIE. She loved the theatre.
COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA It is said that marriage is 50 50. It really was with my mother and father. As she was patient wuth my father and his love for his bulldogs he was patient with her with her love for the theatre. This meant there were many a night he had to stay home with my brother and I so she could attend the many rehearsals. It was worth it because she got many good reviews in the paper.

FITTINGS AND MORE FITTINGS.
Naturally my mother had it all in her head what my ddress should look like. She even knew exactly who the dress maker dhould be. I believe she had all of this decided lomg before I even got those beautiful roses for CHRISTMAS. So I under went several fittings and more fittings before the creation was finnally finnished. It was a dream of a dress and for my mother it was her creatiom come to completion.

CHRISTMAS
CHRISTMAS was always exciting to me but one stands out above. That one I received a dozen long stem roses. They were from the CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL CLUB telling me I had been chosen ss their queen. I was thrilled to say the least. It meant getting queenly attire. My mother designed my dress which was pink adorned with sequins. It also included a mantle made of red velvet trimmed in fir. No queenly attire wouldn’t be complete without a rhinestone collar. a crown and scepter.. Then there were the lessons from the right way to bow and to wave the septer. The ball was scduled for the next FEBRUARY. Then I had to practice with my KING. It seemed like forvever from CHRISTMAS to FEBRUARY.

THE RUNAWAY
In my last 2 posts I told of the antics my brother BEN and I got ourselves into. I guess it was a joint effort and it was the both of us who thought of them in the first place. If I said it was BEN’s ideas he would dispute that quickly and put the blame on me. So on the safe side I laid the blame on the both of us. This next post was just me who thought of this one. One day I decided to run away from home. I crossed one of the biggest streets in our area. My mother tells all I had picked up a paper that had her name on it. I was soon brought home. My runaway days were over never to try it again !

THE ROOF
I don’t know how my mother kept her cool when my brother and I were growing up. You would think that she was an old hand at raising children. Nothing could be further than the truth. We were the first ones to come along. This next post is another example of her ability to keep her cool. One day my brother and I managed to get on the roof. To hear her tell the story made it sound funny but when I look back at it was pretty frightening. For 2 little children to be on a roof. She said she just looked at us and now BENNY and KATHLEEN come down from there. Maybe she figured if she showed panicked the story would have a tragic outcome. So all was well we got down and all was well/

THE GUN
The ceilings in our home were very high. In one of the rooms were bookcases that went all the way to the top. Don’t ask me how my brother and I knew my father kept a gun on the top of one of them. Then one day while my and my mom and dad went out leaving us with a sitter. This was a rare occasion because most of the time we would go out as a family. We got the bright idea to scale the bookcase and get the gun down. When they got home they found the sitter sitting on the front steps. When they asked her why wasn’t she watching us her reply was simply oh they have a gun! In all probability they must have remained calm and got the gun away from us and nobody was harmed.

THE GREEN HOUSE
I don’t know how my father managed to fit anything else into his busy schedule but he had a green house built-in back of our home. He thought he could raise orchids. Actually he was really good at it. One asset of this new hobby was he didn’t have to get mom a corsage if they were going out. It even had a little pool in it that would add humility to the atmosphere. At the top of the brick wall in the back wall at the back of the house there were broken bottles. I guess he put them there for security. His orchids were beautiful and received many compliments on them. He even found time to join a club that was just for orchid lovers.

ROSES ROSES EVERY WHERE
My mother discovered that there was a garden club especially for people who were mainly interested in roses. She planted some on either side of the walkway leading to the front door. When either my brother would fall off our bikes that SANTA had just brought us she would call out to us.”Did you hurt the rose-bush?” Never mind if we had hurt ourselves with any childhood accidents that would require a band-aid or any other type of bandage. She learned from her other rose-bush friends that rose bushes don’t like to have their feet wet. This required them being in a raised bed so the water could drain off qauickly. This was her reasoning behind lanting them on either side of the walkway. She also discovered growing roses wasn’t as easy as she thought so she settled on the rose called PEACE because of it’s ability to survive the weather here.

THE ROSE
My mother being among her other amazing talents was an exceptional resourceful woman. When my father would go on these doggie trips she was left to her own devices to find something to do. Her first endeavor was joining a garden club. She discovered the beauty of rose bushes and went about planting some in the front yard.
